Some of the most significant challenges facing post-industrial American families include potential discrimination, health concerns such as obesity as well as difficult financial crisis and economic challenges. Social challenges including animosity and clash of cultures that creates huge challenge for most American families is critical (Franklin & James, 2015). Another problem for families is the growing number of divorces in the American society. The divorce rate is high indicating the increased level of instability and increased rates of single parenthoods.
According to Crouter and Booth (2014), the trend of adult marriages declining shows the lack of strong family structures. In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, most American families have been facing financial challenge. For example, most of the American college students have been unable to pay their college debt due to the crisis of the economy. These challenges should be addressed to improve post-industrial American family structures.
Some of the examples of institutional gender discrimination include wage inequalities and lack of recognition of women in the society. Women have been receiving lower salaries than their male counterparts while performing the same roles and functions. The lack of women recognition in senior management roles and boards also shows the gender discrimination aspect. Social institutions have also been accused of promoting institutional gender discrimination. The problems of institutional gender discrimination should be addressed accordingly through comprehensive reforms in the social policies (Waylen, 2014). The wage gap between women and men is not surprising because women have been complaining for years about their discrimination.
For years now, the wage gap has been increasing between men and women. However, I was not aware of labor market segmentation. It is impossible to understand that the concept of labor market segmentation in an effective way. Gender socialization has a significant influence on the occupational choices of men and women (Pedulla & Thébaud, 2015). Increased socialization of gender is effective in the selection of the right positions for women and men.
